ODDLY HEAD & SLOGANS

Slogans (2017) has hit the streets! Artist Oddly Head’s somewhat tongue in cheek blazon is the latest addition to the flyingleaps artists’ poster project.

Following on from his recent fabulously successful solo exhibition REPEAT AFTER ME at Hang Up gallery Oddly Head (aka Tim Fishlock) continues his wry critique of contemporary culture. If his ME series of prints mirrored our compulsion to create online second selves, stymieing our ability to make our own decisions with catastrophic results, Head’s new Slogans work worries at language’s role in acting as a spur or locus for broader political, social action.

Prior to assuming the role of fine artist this English grad. Oddly Head’s background was as a designer-maker (he worked for Thomas Heatherwick amongst other art/design luminaries). Head went on to design typefaces as well as curating and publishing exquisite series of prints under the 50 by 70 moniker.

Slogans (2017) Oddly Head

His American Sampler (2010) reissued the printmaking of Sister Corita Kent, reminding us how during the 60s this renegade arty nun absorbed and recycled LA advertising slogans and bold colours to produce vivid, text heavy prints that both engaged with and critiqued rightwing politics and consumer culture. Her work – politically radical calls promoting peace and love over military and social conflict – served to strip away the commercial imperative of her source material (billboard ads, food packaging, etc.) and turn them into odes to joy and positivity.

Oddly Head’s works tend towards a darker, more disturbing reflection of where we’re at in the world. SLOGANS IN NICE TYPEFACES WON’T SAVE THE HUMAN RACES (2017) cuts through cant. But at the same time acknowledges that given a choice between physical conflict and wars of words humankind really should be evolving (Ha!) towards a point where the latter is exclusively employed. In art as in life, words can simplify, slow down, anchor and direct attention. They can also complicate, contradict and redefine our encounters, not just with art but the world and each other.
