Description
THE COURAGE TO SAY NO
Mark Titchner’s art practice takes many and varied forms. For example, his hugely ambitious, triple-dome work Me. Here. Now. was recently installed at Stainer Street SE1. Three giant polished stainless steel rotundas, echoing the architecture of their viaduct arch site, shimmer above a public thoroughfare at newly developed London Bridge Station. Earlier this year, community workshops run in association with Worcester City Art Gallery, bore fruit in more modest but equally valid guise, ‘ordinary voices’ being presented in the urban environment. Titchner’s second poster for flyingleaps started life with a member of a local residents’ association addressing the deceptively simple question ‘What do we want?’ The answer, rendered in a plangent text that glows, leaps out from another of the artist’s signature kaleidoscopic designs is The Courage To Say No (2018). Again, Titchner has confounded, confronted the hectic pace of contemporary life, social media flimflam, fake news and populist political rhetoric with a work that brings passersby up short. It’s both bold and oblique as well as being exquisitely detailed and visually prepossessing. A perfect follow up to his brilliant and still much sought-after first poster Please Believe These Days Will Pass (2016).   http://marktitchner.com
