I Remember The Future (2018)
Over a period spanning almost 20 years Dr. D’s visual activism has taken numerous forms: billboard détournements; floating protests on canals; interventions on public transport that mimic official notices; faux street signage; large paste-ups and more discreet scale posters whose targets range from existential angst to governmental and corporate malfeasance such as his ‘GCHQ Always Listening To Our Customers’ which skewers both surveillance culture and ubiquitous corporate PR tosh. Dr. D’s I Remember The Future (2018) poster print for flyingleaps conjures mixed emotions. Recalling a time when the white heat of technology promised to lead us to the sunlit uplands of a leisure society: a place where work no longer squatted remorselessly on our daily lives. Ha! Think again. The flat, lemon yellow floppy disk no longer represents the promise of a brave new world but rather glows like a colossal monument to humankind’s reckless hubris. A subtle dot screen effect lends this elegiac work a delicate beauty but the text, all aglitter against its mottled charcoal ground, delivers an enigmatic sucker punch. We got it all very wrong in the past. And as sure as night follows day…   www.drdlondon.com
